This little blur is a swallow. They scream up and down the river chasing insects and bringing them back to their mud nests attached to the underside of the Falls of Neuse Rd bridge.

The herons were out in full force this weekend. It must be that time of year, because they were all chasing each other around and making themselves look pretty. This one spent half an hour fluffing up his feathers before being chased from his spot by a bigger heron.
Herons are pretty skittish birds and even with the fast-moving Neuse River between us, he was constantly aware of what I was doing. This was right at the mouth of Falls Dam (the only place you’ll see whitewater on the Neuse).
